How much time do you spend on your phone each day? I bet it’s probably more than you’d expect! According to a new study, U.S. consumers spend an average of 5 hours per day on their phones. That means that about â…“ of your time awake is spent staring at a phone screen. If you ask me, that’s a lot of time wasted. And nearly 20% of that time is being spent on Facebook—FOMO, anyone?
While there are apps that are aiming to improve our lives, you’ve got to admit: most of the time spent on your phone is probably wasted time.
I’ve talked about how to avoid reaching for your phone so often by mindfully questioning what you’re about to do, but sometimes that isn’t enough. Sometimes we need a solid reminder to set down our phones. And that’s exactly what Moment aims to do.
Put down your phone and get back to your life
That’s the tagline of Moment, an app that tracks how much you use your phone each day. (See if you’re near that 5 hours per day.) Track how long you’ve used your phone, what apps you’ve spent the most time on, and set limits as to how much time you want to spend each day.
You’ll get gentle reminders when you’re reaching your limit and notifications when it’s time to set down your phone for the day.
Simply install the app (it’s free in the Apple App Store), open it up, and let it do its thing throughout the day.
While the app is free, if you decide to upgrade your account you’ll get access to even more handy features. Currently, there’s a one-time fee to upgrade your account and you’ll have access to everything Moment has to offer forever. But there’s talk of a yearly subscription, so get it while you can!
Why do we need Moment?
Like Kevin Holesh, creator of Moment, put it, I find myself ignoring my family and friends in favor of my iPhone…. I’m lucky enough to have a loving family and stellar friends, I should enjoy them every chance I get. Facebook, Pinterest, and texting can wait.
I’m sure we’ve all done the same thing (and maybe even felt the same way), but sometimes we instinctively pick up our phones when there’s a break in conversation. Or we feel it vibrate, grab it to look at a text, and then see all the other notifications… Next thing you know you’re 10-minutes into a 30-minute video of sleepy puppies who just can’t hold their eyes open. Adorable? Yes, worth ignoring your friends and family for? No.
We all have excuses for reaching for our phones, and while you should probably reply to that important work email, it’s not necessary (or good for you) to spend 10 minutes after checking Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
Even if you’re not interested in upgrading your Moment account to access all the handy features, I highly encourage you to download the app. See how much time you’re spending on your phone, you’ll be shocked!
