A question that people often ask when they learn about mindfulness is what’s the right age to start? And the answer is: whenever you want!
While most people begin practicing mindfulness during or after a stressful life-changing event, it doesn’t matter when you start. Mindfulness is something that anyone can benefit from in any stage of life. From children to elderly adults—they even make mindfulness tools for children, see some of them here. Even though there’s no right age to begin your journey into mindfulness, there are a few stages in life when people tend to turn toward it:
When entering the workforce for the first time as an adult.
When students graduate and are finally entering the real world or adulthood, it’s a stressful time. Competition for jobs is fierce and things are a little less straightforward with no one there to guide you every step of the way. Today’s Millennials will report the highest levels of stress of any generation, which is why they’re beginning to turn to mindfulness.
After getting married and starting a family.
While settling down is nice and can have its relaxing perks, it also comes with stress. Buying a house, raising kids, managing your finances—it can all get a little overwhelming. May people end up tiring themselves out because they just can’t handle all of the responsibility. Mindfulness is a way to help you relax at the end of the day.
People over the age of 50.
When our past begins to catch up with us. At this stage in life many of us will start to experience more health problems. We’ll might start to regret past life decisions and experiences. We realize that we won’t be around forever and that we need to make the most of what we have. Worries can begin to run through your head, causing insomnia and stress. Mindfulness can help us live in the present moment, not in the past or in the future, but make the most of now.
